Not Self-Interest.
But, Self-Concern.
Yes. They are synonyms.
But the term Self-Interest has a certain implication.
It elevates the notion to Selfishness.
If not more so up the thesaurus, to Greedy.
And then the conversation is over.
Capitalism. Even just to entertain it. Philosophically.
How it could be all the more the least-bad option.
If only better regulated.
But the term Self-Interest. Conversation killer.
Makes the counter-arguer think Greed.
Yes. At a glance.
Self-Interest is probably what each of us ironically all have most in common.
Based on instinct. The Number One instinct. Survival. All that. Right?
But Self-Concern is more fundamental.
It precedes Self-Interest.
The order of things is Need.
Then maybe Get.
Then maybe just maybe Accumulate.
And since all species are born of Need.
We are all born of Need and therefore Self-Concern.
Need drives Concern more precisely than Interest and Greed,
At least that's what the definitions of these imprecise synonyms suggest in my thesaurus,
To actually Get what you Need?
And more so to Accumulate it?
To actually graduate from Needing?
To the luxury of Wanting?
These are the luxuries that make breaking free possible.
Removing all the limitations of being so, Concerned.
Making possible our raised ambitions.
From Self-Concern to maybe Self-Interest to maybe Greed.
In accordance with the order of things.
So back to Capitalism.
Capitalism. Even just to entertain it. Philosophically.
How could it become all the more the least-bad option?
It’s got to be better regulated.
Regulated in accordance with our most fundamental instinct of Survival.
Which means with Concern.
Not Interest.
And especially not Greed.
